We’re the crew behind Zion Shores, a bunch of adventure junkies born and raised in Utah. We grew up loving the “Greatest Snow on Earth” as skiers and snowboarders, and spent every summer ripping it up on the lakes and reservoirs—waterskiing, wakeboarding, and wakesurfing. We’ve done just about every outdoor activity you can think of in this high desert playground, but there was one thing missing: the pure stoke of surfing. There’s just nothing in Utah that compares to the feeling of catching mother nature’s waves. Surfing isn’t an experience; it’s a lifestyle.

Our background is in civil construction—moving dirt, pouring concrete, and building infrastructure for communities. So, when we started building private sport lake communities in Utah, it was only natural to dream about bringing a surf experience here too. During the development of one of our projects, Southern Shores, a private lake community in Hurricane, we stumbled upon a game-changing wave tech from UNIT Surf Pools. These guys had created a modular wave machine that pumps out a continuous standing wave, and we knew right away that we had to see it in action. After a trip to Milan, Italy to ride the wave for ourselves, we decided to take a shot and bring that technology back home. It became the highlight of the Southern Shores project.

The only downside? The wave machine is exclusive to homeowners and their guests. And while it was awesome, we realized that the wave had so much more potential. We wanted to give more people a chance to ride, and we knew we could do better. That’s when we got the idea to build an epic surf destination in southern Utah where everyone could experience the stoke.

We started searching for the perfect spot and also decided to experience existing surf parks for ideas on how we could design our new project. We checked out different wave tech around the globe. We loved the UNIT continuous wave, but we started to develop interest to include a more expensive aspect that could recreate the feeling of catching a real ocean swell—a traveling wave that required paddling, popping up, and riding a wave that moves across the lagoon. This traveling wave concept would require a much greater financial investment and effort. After countless hours of research, travel, and testing, we knew that we had to build a surf park that combined both wave types to create the ultimate inland surf experience.

We had four key priorities for our surf dream:

1. Wave Quality: We needed amazing waves that feel as close to the ocean as possible, with a mix of sizes and styles so that everyone from first-timers to pros could find their perfect ride.

​

2. Wave Reliability: Waves should show up on demand, every time, without fail. No waitng for the perfect set or dealing with mechanical breakdowns.

 

3. Cost to Surf: Surfing should be for everyone, not just the wealthy. We wanted the waves to be accessible, without sacrificing quality.

4. Natural Vibes: We wanted the place to feel like a real-life surf paradise, with lagoons that blend seamlessly into the desert landscape.

After searching high and low, we found our perfect partner in American Wave Machines (AWM) and their PerfectSwell® technology. These guys are the real deal, creatng waves that feel just like the ocean. Their tech powers some of the best surf destinations in the world—Waco Surf in Texas, Surf Stadium in Japan, and Boa Vista in Brazil.
